Editor-in-Chief, The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine

Contractor
Application Deadline: Sep 27, 2024

The Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine (ADLM; formerly AACC) welcomes applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief of its Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine (JALM). Published since 2016, JALM showcases clinically relevant laboratory topics in applied and translational research, and thoughtful commentary on the practice of laboratory medicine.

The Editor-in-Chief (EIC) determines the content of the journal and is responsible for all editorial decisions and the quality and reputation of JALM. The journal publishes original, important, well-documented, peer-reviewed articles on a diverse range of scientific topics of interest to the readership and at the EIC’s discretion. Content supportive of the ADLM community is also valued. The EIC appoints and oversees all members of the journal’s editorial board; solicits manuscripts and assigns them to Associate Editors; and communicates publication guidelines and policies. The EIC is the public face of JALM and represents it at meetings, including at the ADLM Annual Meeting and in an annual report to the ADLM Board of Directors.

JALM is published bi-monthly online by Oxford University Press on behalf of ADLM, and typically presents 150 articles per year from 400 submitted manuscripts, a number that has been increasing. JALM’s 2023 Impact Factor of 1.8 makes it the 18th highest-impact journal in the Medical Laboratory Technology category. Furthering its position as a community journal, ADLM intends to transition JALM to a Gold Open Access business model concurrent with the new EIC’s start. ADLM will provide staff support, responsible for administrative and operational functions, and a stipend. A transition period will begin Spring 2025; full responsibilities will transfer January 1, 2026, commencing a five-year term. The term is renewable once at the discretion of the ADLM Board of Directors.

The successful applicant will be an established scholar in a field of research within the scope of JALM and have a broad interest and knowledge of the field of laboratory medicine and adjacent areas of study, with a keen awareness of new advances and the placement of laboratory medicine within the greater healthcare landscape. They will demonstrate a compelling strategic vision for the journal’s ongoing development and differentiation from ADLM’s other journal, Clinical Chemistry, and other reputable journals in the field; excellent communication and relationship-building skills; a commitment to working collaboratively with the editorial team and staff; a commitment to editorial diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and expertise; an international network of colleagues; and deep editorial experience.

To Apply

Applications should consist of a letter (two page maximum) describing your vision and goals for JALM over the next five years (2026–2030), how this work will complement your other professional activities, and your approach to editing—including how you would increase submissions, balance article output and quality, and otherwise manage JALM’s transition to an open access journal; a complete CV; and three references. Email complete applications by September 27, 2024, to Mark Marzinke, JALM Editor-in-Chief Search Committee Chair, c/o Matt Boyle, ADLM Senior Director of Publishing and Scientific Content, at [email protected].

Questions may be sent to Matt Boyle at the same address.

Interviews will be conducted virtually in October 2024, with a final decision in early 2025.
